Blue Moon Lunar Eclipse on December 31, 2009

The final full moon of 2009 is a lunar eclipse and a blue moon. A blue moon refers to the second full moon in one month.  The first full moon this month occurred on December 2nd and the second full moon is today.  This will be the 13th full moon of 2009.  This phenomenon only occurs every 2.7 years - hence the phrase "once in a blue moon."  And it is rarer that the lunar event occurs on a New Year's Eve (NYE) around every 20 years or so.  It is going to be a 'Blue Moon' the same night it turns a new decade.  The next 'Blue Moon' New Years Eve will be in 29 years on December 31, 2028.
